Thanksgiving: a celebration of the harvest and a day known for noshing and naps. There’s nothing wrong with a day of rest and a bit of indulgence here and there, but going into the holiday that leaves most with a food hangover with a plan can keep the overindulgence at bay.

For starters, it is important to be mindful of upcoming events throughout the holiday season that involve extra calories, and balancing them with an extra workout or two never hurt! A Turkey Trot is a great way to kick off the holiday and burn some extra calories before you sidle up to the table later. Most cities organize these events; if you are local to the area, register your flock here for a fun way to start the day on an active note!

Secondly, make sure there are healthy options at the meal; even if you are not hosting, offer to bring a side dish or two. Having alternatives to traditional dishes is a great way to stay on track. Try out these healthy twists on traditional Stuffing, Sweet Potato Casserole, and Rice Casserole, or these amazing Stuffed Pears or Pumpkin Pie for dessert! Watch out for hidden calories in seemingly healthy dishes like green bean casseroles, as well as fancy cocktails that pack tons of sugar. Stick to cleaner beverages like vodka soda or wine spritzers, and be sure to hydrate throughout the day.

As for the day after, be sure to drink plenty of water to flush out any sugar, alcohol or salt-induced bloating, and stay away from the leftovers! Get in some extra activity — a walk or run outside, a quick gym session, or some at-home HIIT can keep your metabolism going through the family, friend, and food frenzy.
