Sunscreen Up

Skin Cancer Awareness Month is here.

And if you live in Colorado, staying aware is even more important. The combination of living at higher altitudes, enjoying over 300 days per year of sunshine, and the opportunity for outdoor play in the mountains leads to higher cancer-causing ultraviolet ray exposure than other areas of the country. However, a survey by the Melanoma Foundation of New England shows that Coloradans don’t use sunscreen as consistently as those in other western states; only 7.69 percent of Colorado respondents always put on sunscreen during the fall. And that’s a huge issue, as the sun’s damaging rays are dangerous even when it’s not sunny and warm outside. Melanoma is now the leading cause of death in women between 25 and 30. And with over 5 million cases diagnosed every year, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States.

So before you head out, sunscreen up! A list of my personal faves for super sun protection on the daily below:

  • Moisturizer with SPF! Start the day protected. I love this Kiehl’s formula, as well as Supergoop’s, which does double duty as a makeup primer!

  • A great tinted moisturizer with SPF for those active days when you want to keep the makeup routine simple; Tarte, Supergoop, and Coola all have great formulas.

  • An all-over sunscreen lotion; Supergoop is my daily go-to.

  • A sunscreen stick for face and chest touch ups on the go!

  • A mineral powder for my part (although a hat and sunglasses are always the best protectors!)

Sunscreen up and stay safe out there!
